Davis Graham & Stubbs LLP is excited to announce that R.J. Colwell has joined the firm as a senior associate in the Energy & Mining Group. R.J. specializes in mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, private equity investments, and joint ventures within the energy and natural resources sectors. He is admitted to practice in Colorado, Texas, and Washington, DC.
With significant experience in operational and commercial agreements, R.J. represents both domestic and international clients, including private equity funds and their portfolio companies. R.J. has advised clients on transactional and state and federal regulatory issues related to investments in and the sale or acquisition of entities across the entire energy value chain. His expertise covers crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids, produced and recycled water, biomethane, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide, as well as conventional and renewable power. He has also advised clients on regulatory and transactional aspects of natural gas and LNG import/export facilities and other strategic energy projects located around the globe.
Prior to joining Davis Graham, R.J. practiced oil and gas law in Houston for six years and most recently served as the global co-chair of White & Case’s midstream practice group. Earlier in his legal career, R.J. served as an Honors Attorney and then Attorney-Adviser at the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, DC. As an Attorney-Advisor, he advised DOE senior leadership on transactional, operational, regulatory, and policy issues and matters involving natural gas and LNG imports and exports, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, CCUS, energy security, and other programs involving coal, petroleum, and natural gas. As an Honors Attorney, R.J. earned the Secretary’s Achievement Award for his enforcement work on energy efficiency standards.
R.J. received his J.D. from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before law school, R.J. served as a Field Artillery Officer in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Captain in three years. During his distinguished military service, R.J. was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Combat Action Badge. R.J. is active in a number of veterans organizations, including Impact A Hero, the PTSD Foundation of America’s Camp Hope, and the Veteran Leadership Development Group.
